What a busy week we have had! Reggie has adjusted to family life and sniffed out every house on the block! The flexi leash and harness has been great for walking, and when we “meet” people for the first time, it takes people a while to realize that he is missing a paw. They usually notice when they bend over to rub his belly, which appears to be Reggie’s favorite thing of all.
Speaking of the belly-rubs….he has tripped me twice now. He runs in front of me and then stops abruptly to flip onto his back and expose his belly. I tried to explain to him that it will be hard to walk him when I am on crutches but the little Hedonist doesn’t care at all. It would be actually funny if I wasn’t afraid I was going to fall on him and crush him. He reminds me of the fainting goats in this link.Fainting Goats
We went to the vet on Friday and got set up on his Heartgard and Frontline. She agrees with the rescue vet that he is probably 6-7 years old. His front teeth are almost non-existent, which explains his need for the ultra smelly canned food. We have him on Blue Buffalo Wilderness duck kibble mixed with the turkey and chicken wet food. I am pretty sure that Reggie eats better than the rest of us, but we figure he deserves it after having had such a tough life. We will have his blood work for his heartworms in January, which is about 4 months from his initial treatment. I am hoping by then his blood work comes back clean.
My 3 year old daughter loves Reggie. It is funny to watch her talk to him. When he does something she thinks is silly, she will slap her hand to her forehead, shake her head, and say “Oh, Weggie!” I love watching them interact. Her is a clip of them playing early in the morning, and Reggie nibbled on her toes a little, which is a common occurrence with him.
I’ll update more as we get to know our new friend……
